It would be great to have configurable start button actions for touch-based input such as "tap" and "long-tap", in addition to the current mouse click actions. I'm primarily using the start menu with keyboard/mouse/stylus, but on touchscreen devices it actually makes sense to be able to instantly bring up the start screen when tapping the start button.

Touchscreen devices also have a hardware Windows button, which simulates keyboard input. So you can set the "Win key" to open the start screen and "mouse click" to open the start menu. Then the hardware button will open the start screen and touching the start button will open the menu.

The hardware Windows button was only mandated with Windows 8, so earlier devices may not have it. And even though I do have three buttons on my convertible laptop that can be customized in control panel's tablet PC settings that I could assign to the Windows key, or Shift+Win, that's not working right because it doesn't work when an elevated process window is focused. Additionally, binding the Windows key to the start screen would apply to hardware keyboards and the on-screen keyboard as well, where I don't see the start screen as a preferable option.
