One thing I always hated about the default start menu top caption was the huge font it uses and the chunky amounts of padding it has around the text. It'd be nice to be able to adjust both.

You can adjust all of this by editing the skin file.

Cool, thanks for the info. Does this mean "no" on the feature, though? I assume there are lots of settings which are in CSM which you could just change by editing the skin file as well.

Right. There are way too many settings you can tweak, and they need to work together. Providing individual settings for all of them will be pretty confusing for the average user. And the usability won't be much better than editing a skin file directly.

if you want it done, i can do it for ya?; you want smaller font, and less padding? and by caption you mean the text on the left side?, if so i should be able to post it by tomorrow (goin to sleep now, or id prolly have it in 5 mins)

If by 'top caption' you mean the user name text, that parameter is called "User_font" in the Skin file. I changed it to User_font="Segoe UI",normal,16 instead of the default Segoe UI",bold,22. Makes it fit longer names. Make sure you open Resource Hacker as admin if you are directly opening and saving the skin file from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\Skins\.

I am a Windows enthusiast and helped a little with Classic Shell's testing and usability/UX feedback.

I got the font changed, but the padding around the username (yes, I should have said that rather than caption) is stumping me. I don't use the user picture so I don't need it to be nearly so chunky. Here's the before and after of what I'm looking for:

The height of the top area comes from the main bitmap. You need to change the bitmap and its margins.

Thanks for the help, but I think at this point the effort involved just isn't worth the results. I'm just going to try to live with it looking chunky.

the tops what it looks like and the bottom screenshot is what u want it to look like?, ifso throw the skin here.. it should only take me 2-3 mins of work to fix
