Hi all, I've installed the start menu and the PC Settings link isn't working in version 4.3.0, running on windows 8.1 pro x64 bit. I have it working now by following this post on a different forum as a temporary fix. Great product so huge thanks! |

Sorry I should have said initially. When I clicked it, there was no error. The screen simply flickered. PC settings didn't appear. Nor was it "running" in the background as when I cycled through open apps (alt + tab keys) I couldn't see it either. Hope this helps. |

Got some more information for you. Every time I reboot (or shut down and boot up), this bug returns. It's slightly frustrating. Look forward to an update. |

If I reboot, the original bug occurs again (I.e. PC Settings link doesn't work). In order to get it to work I have to run the script mentioned in my original post in order to get the PC Settings link working. The same goes for shutting down. I.e. I shut down, I boot up into windows and the PC Settings link doesn't work. I have to run the script mentioned in my original post in order to get PC Settings link to work. |

Can you open the PC Settings via other means, like from the Windows start screen? It is likely just that the settings are busted, and that script fixes them somehow, but temporarily. |

See what happens if you press Win+I and then click "Change PC Settings". Does it open every time when the Start Menu link is not working? If not, then there's something broken in your Windows 8.1 installation. |

I doubt it's a Windows issue as everything worked fine including the PC Settings link in the start screen before installing this start menu (this is a clean install to inform). I'll test what you suggested later and get back to you  thanks for your help

Hi, It is running in the background in all cases. Yet it isn't accessible. I uninstalled classic shell and the problem still exists so it is a windows issue. I'll re do the clean install as this means my system image backup is screwed with this bug as well. Thanks for your aid and I apologise sincerely! This experience won't stop me from using your start menu as it is my opinion the best available. |

To confirm fully, after a clean install. This is working without issues. Currently suspect either my Registry Cleaner or CCleaner may have caused the problem originally. Thanks again. |

I recommend you to not use such registry cleaning apps and stick to the built-in Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe). If you must do any cleanup using CCleaner, do it only for third party apps, not for the Windows operating system related functionality. |

Why don't you recommend the use of a registry cleaner? I have found that it speeds up the system, especially defragmentation the registry. |

Registry cleaning yields no performance benefits. It is not required and does not affect performance ever since Windows XP started loading the Registry into the system cache. Registry cleaners damage the system more often than not and delete entries that neither the cleaning app has an idea of nor the user. It is absolutely not required. |

By definition, cleaners mess with registry information they don't understand. Any such software can break other programs because they don't know the specifics of particular implementation. |

Just to inform, I've discovered that CCleaner isn't to blame. Nor was it a clean of the registry cleaner linked in my earlier post. The cause to this windows issue was a defragmentation of the registry. I will continue to use CCleaner but not the registry cleaner. Thanks for your advice. |

I agree with Ivo and Gaurav, from my own experences, with registry cleaners. The Windows built in Disk Cleanup was so slow on my Xp, and would get stuck, (something to do with flash files). I would try all types of registry cleaners at that time. I started to learn the hard way that those programs, as well as memory managment programs to speed up computer, were terrible. CCleaner, or as it used to be called "Crap Cleaner" is a lot better than other registry cleaners out there. Still, it has screwed up small things. It is best to review what it finds first, make a backup, before going ahead with the changes. The problem is by the time you figure out some thing is wrong, time has passed, and registry has been updated many times. I still use CCleaner, but only for the default settings of regular cleaning, not the registry section. Live and learn.
