Post subject:  win10x64pro: click "pc settings" has no effect, not starting

Hello,

on a freshly installed win10x64 pro I have problems with CS. I tried version 4.2.5.c and 4.2.7. I also did a windows re-install and same thing:

When I click on "pc settings" / "PC-Einstellungen" in start menu, is has no effect. Nothing happens. If i click it using the windows start menu it opens right away. I can also access it through any other way in windows, just not using CS.

How can I debug this?

I am managing several computers, it is only - but reproducibly - happening on a Lenovo B50-70, sadly I have only one of this kind around...

I guess you are unable to open it from the right side column of the main menu when you click "Settings"?

Using Classic Start Menu, see if you can open Settings from All Programs -> Apps -> Settings.

Also, which build of Windows 10 are you using?

Since it happens only with that 1 PC and you can launch Settings via Apps folder, it is possible that the ms-settings: protocol is broken on it.

From Run dialog of Windows (Win+R): does this work?

ms-settings:

Press enter.

good idea. trying to run "ms-settings:" from run dialog silently does nothing.

i tried this on other machines, it works there.

wtf, i did 2 times a fresh windows install, any ideas?

No idea how to fix the broken protocol, might require reinstating some missing Registry entries, but you could use Win+i keys as a workaround to open Settings. It's the fastest way.

different computer, (also win 10 pro x64 1511 10586.494) kind of similar problem:

from run dialog "ms-settings:" is working, starting apps=> settings also works, but not clicking on the right side on settings in CS.
using CS 4.2.7

For that PC, go to Customize Start Menu tab in Start Menu Settings and double click the Settings item. Erase everything from Command field and type: ms-settings: there. Then the right column Settings item should work.

the old value which did not work was "pc_settings". after i changed it as suggested to "ms-settings:" it did work.

i noticed this problem by now also on a 3rd PC. it seems there is a bug in CS or win10 changed some behaviour with latest patches? not sure how far back this issue goes.

Are you using the official build 1511 of Windows 10, or one of the insider builds?

the latest PCs in question were installed using USB media, if i recall corrently based on techbench ISO and manually enhanced by adding ei.cfg for edition selection option

https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/softwar ... /techbench

the build running on the PCs is always the latest win update: win 10 pro x64 1511 10586.494
