To start off, I am not really sure whether this should be classified as a feature request or a bug report. Since, however, ClassicShell does not replicate a functionality exactly, I choose to file it under bug report.

Description:
When using any of the two column skins and the Shut Down menu is opened via the navigation keys (arrow keys), it is the top-most item that is selected by default. This is different from what happens in the Windows 7 start menu where it is the bottom-most item that is selected.

Steps to Reproduce
  1. Select any of the two column skins (Windows 8, Windows Aero, etc.)
  2. Press the Windows Key
  3. Press the Right arrow key twice. This should open the shutdown menu.
Observed Behaviour
The top-most item (usually Switch User) is selected by default when the menu is opened.

Expected Behaviour
The bottom-most item in the menu (usually Sleep or Hibernate) should be selected by default when the menu is opened by the steps above.
This is the default behaviour in Windows 7. This expected behaviour is reproduced perfectly in Stardock's Start8 and Start10.

Why do you think that's better?

  1. First, it is the "normal" behaviour in the original system (Windows Vista/7)
  2. Sleep/Hibernate (at the bottom) is performed more often than Switch User (at the top)
Most computers run one main user account by the way so switching user is not very important to most users any way.
  3. Power users who use the keyboard extensively (like me) have the [Win-Key][Right][Right][Enter] key sequence for Sleep committed to muscle memory.

I might as well add that I would have submitted a patch/pull request if the project was still open-source. Unfortunately it isn't any more so I have no option but to submit this bug report so you fix it at your end.

1. The Windows 7 menu behavior is non-standard. In a submenu, the top item getting selected is normal.
2. The preferred action varies by each user. Switch user is a safer action (for Downloads or some critical task going on.)
3. Yes I agree, you are used to it. But Win > right > right > u is not hard to get used to. Or Win > right > right > up > Enter.

If the default Shutdown command is anything other than Shutdown, then Shutdown becomes the bottom most item.

It is true, the Windows 7 behaviour may be non-standard, the preferred action may vary and a new key sequence can be learnt.

The point being raised is that the thing you are trying to reproduce was designed in a certain way, however "non-standard" it may be. Secondly, people who have been using this system will expect it to work in the same way it used to. And finally, some other alternatives replicate this "non-standard" behaviour proving that it is not an impossibility.

All that is being asked for is one event handler with a single line of code to reproduce this "expected but non-standard behaviour". Could it be asking for too much?

On the other hand, people who have been using Classic Shell for years are used to the current behavior. It is way more than a single line of code.

In Classic Shell 4.3.0, there is a new setting for Windows 7 style menu to select the last item in the shutdown menu instead of the first.
