Post subject:  Win8.1 Update (Oct 16, 2015) Causing Classic Shell Failure

Microsoft pushed updates to my system on Windows 8.1 which caused Classic Shell 4.2.4 to not function correctly on the restart. I can expand the menu, select an application and launch it. I now close the application. The application icon remains on the taskbar in grayed-out state. Now the classic shell menu button becomes extremely slow to respond or does not respond at all. I had to restart the system and then immediately disable Classic Shell from the properties (right-click menu on the shell start button). Any access to Classic Shell causes the windows explorer to have high CPU usage (just by opening the preferences which starts classic shell). The menu becomes totally unresponsive. I uninstalled the Windows updates that were pushed to me (I also disabled the automatic windows update); but Classic Shell still does not work. Everything was great before the push of the updates - so it was something changed by MS that caused this problem.

You could try using System Restore (C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe).
