During setup, the application reports that "The setup was unable to automatically close all requested applications. Please ensure that the applications holding files in use are closed before continuing with the installation."

The text is vague because it fails to explain which applications are holding files in use, or at the least to explain what files are in use.

It should list the applications that the user needs to inspect, or the files that are preventing the installation. Is this possible?

In my experience it lists the processes that need to be closed, usually Explorer.
What OS are you using?

Either way, this message is part of the system - either the MSI or the restart manager. I don't have much control over those.

@Diogynes, yes unfortunately this message is part of the OS. Can't be customized. It is because Restart Manager sometimes fails to close the processes/programs automatically. Generally, the processes you need to close/terminate before installing/updating Classic Shell are Explorer.exe and IExplore.exe, but there may be others if the Restart Manager indicates as needing to be closed.
