I have just noticed that when I choose shutdown, it looks like the computer has shutdown, but it hasn't.
I know this because my RAM drive doesn't lose its contents like it used to. I estimate this has been happening for about 5 days, based on file dates in my RAM drive.

It sounds like you have it set to hibernate, This means it is shutting down (and your ram is actually going blank) but before it does the system takes everything on ram and stores it in a file on the Hard drive. Then on boot-up it loads everything back into ram) One way to prove this is to unplug the system, then tap the power button, then plug it back in (and it should still boot the same way) However it might be going to sleep (which keeps power in the ram, and doing the above would clear your ramdisk)

I'm shutting it down 'manually' every day.
Start > Shutdown...
I have choices that include sleep, hibernate, shutdown.
I carefully click shutdown.
Windows then says 'shutting down'.
Screen goes black, computer goes quiet.

Click on the desktop, press Alt+F4 and select Shut Down from there. Do you see the same problem?

@rossnixon, btw you do know right that in Windows 8 and Windows 10 as well, clicking Shutdown actually only logs you off and then hibernates the system? That is how Microsoft designed it. To do a full shutdown, now you must either hold down Shift while you click Shutdown or disable hybrid shutdown from Classic Start Menu settings "Main Menu" tab.
