I don't know if this is in fact a bug because I have only seen it on one computer (so far...) but I wasn't able to fix it so I have had to uninstall ClassicShell and go with another (paid premium) product.

Right after the W10 upgrade I installed 4.2.1 which looked fine, and worked for all the "desktop" items I tried, but clicking the "Windows 10 Start" link led to... nothing.

I found a forum post elsewhere that suggested it was just a corrupt profile and that creating a new user would fix it - it didn't.

Installed the IOBit competitor menu, which just didn't do what I wanted it to. Couldn't find a configuration menu item that according to their "help" was suposed to be there. Didn't have the time to mess around looking so killed it.

Tried Classicshell 4.2.3 which is supposed to have better W10 support - oh dear, that stopped me from being able to use the computer at all. Clicking the "Start" button brought up a menu for about one second but even if I was fast enough to click something on it which it was still up, *nothing* worked at all. Problem with that was - if you can't use the menu at all, how do you start the Control Panel to uninstall? Answer was Winkey+R - "control appwiz.cpl" and I removed 4.2.3.

Tried again with a new download of 4.2.1 but still same behaviour: select any menu item you like, as long as it's not the new Win10 Start.

So, I have sadly had to ditch ClassicShell as my start menu of choice for Windows 10, until I know it's stable and 100% functional. Pity, because it does everything I want it to do and is way more configurable than anyone could possibly want.

Classic Shell 4.2.1 was developed for earlier builds of Windows 10 before build 10240 (the "RTM" build which is being distributed to computer makers). So it is not 100% compatible with the final Windows 10 version due to last minute changes by Microsoft.

Classic Shell 4.2.3 is compatible but again there were some updates released for Windows 10 apps due to which it started crashing. (one of the app's icon had a bad name). Until the next release of Classic Shell is out very soon, try this patch: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4822. Note that it is only for Classic Shell 4.2.3 and 64-bit Windows 10. The next version will incorporate this fix.

Note that Windows 10 itself is still buggy and updates to the OS can cause such incompatibilities.

The machine was running 32-bit Win7 - I wonder if it upgraded to 32- or 64-bit W10? Not available at the moment so I can't check. What I can say is that it is an AMD processor based computer, but that shouldn't make any difference... should it?

You can check by right clicking "This PC" in File Explorer and then clicking Properties. In the window that opens called System, it should show you the bitness.

I have a similar problem. With version 4.2.1, I can't use the standard Windows 10 button on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. I've just downloaded version 4.2.3 on my 32-bit platform and the standard button is working again - partially. If I right-click on the start button, I still get the Classic Start Menu rather than the standard right-click menu.

I can only get back the standard right-click menu if I select Exit in the Classic Start Menu, but then I can't restart Classic Start. I can see Classic Explorer Settings, Classic IE Settings, Classic Shell Help and Classic Shell ReadMe under Classic Shell, but none of them allow me to restart Classic Start?!?

First, you don't have to exit Classic Start Menu to use the original Windows 10 functionality. Shift+click will open the Windows 10 menu, and Shift+right-click will open the Windows 10 context menu. You can change what key opens what menu from the Controls tab in the settings. Additionally, you can get the Windows 10 context menu by pressing Win+X.

And second, the easiest way to restart the start menu is to run the "Classic Start Menu Settings" shortcut and then close the settings.

Thanks. That resolves the issue - for now. However, I can't see the setting that allows me to change which menu is displayed when right-clicking and shift-right-clicking. It suits me to left-click to get the standard screen and shift-left-click to get the standard Start button the Classic screen. It is counter-intuitive to then get the Classic Menu when right-clicking. Your right-click options seem to be fixed.

Separately, I initially registered a 4 character user name with the same email address, but I can't log on with it, even though I've received an email that tells me it was accepted?

Windows 10 edited part of my message! It should have said, "It suits me to left-click to get the standard Start Screen and shift-left-click to get the Classic screen".

Look for a setting named "Right click opens the Windows context menu". It selects which of the two menus you get for right-click and Shift+right-click.
