I'm using win 8.1 and when I install a programme it doesn't create a folder or shortcut to it in the All Programs section |

There is a checkbox for that in the installer. Maybe you unchecked it? |

So I should re-install? |

Yes, you will have to uninstall, then install again. Make sure the checkbox is marked. |

I uninstalled and installed the latest version 4.1.0 and there was no options other than to choose the instal path and now it doesn't work. I have the awful windows button that takes me to the apps. |

Right above the install path there should be a checkbox "Create a start menu folder". Did you not see it? |

It was already ticked.\ i've reinstalled so will have to wait until I install a new programme and see if it creates a shortcut |

Oh, so you are not talking about the Classic Shell shortcuts, but some other program? It is up to that program's installer to create shortcuts. Classic Shell has no control over that. |

Yes, the shortcut-creation inside the Start Menu\Program folders is the job of the installer. Classic Start Menu only does the job of displaying those shortcuts. |

Ok. It's just that I installed adobe CS6 master collection and no shortcuts in the start menu program folder. Nothing gets created and placed in there |

Did the new programs show up in the Windows start menu? If so, can you find where those shortcuts are located? |

Yes check on the Start screen's "Apps view" to see if the shortcuts are getting created there. If you see CS6 shortcuts, right click them and choose Open File Location so you will know if the Start Menu or Programs folder has been redirected. |

Do you mean the tab screen that appears when you click on "Start" when you hover your cursor over the right side of the screen? If so then no. They aren't there. In fact nothing installed apart from winrar and maybe one or two other programmes I've installed show up. |

I mean the Apps View of the Start screen - the one that appears when you press Ctrl+Tab on the regular tiles view of the Start screen. |

Yeah they don't appear there although I installed something today and it showed up so maybe whatever was blocking shortcuts from being made has gone |

Nope. New installed programmes are still not showing up. Sick of this as I've used this programme since shortly after I got win 8. If this continues to not work I'll have to find alternatives sadly. |

If programs don't show up in the start screen then something is wrong with your system (unrelated to Classic Shell). The whole premise of the start menu (and start screen) hinges on the premise that installers put shortcuts in the Start Menu folder or its Programs sub-folder, and that where the system goes looking for the installed programs. In your case that mechanism appears broken. I doubt an alternative to Classic Shell will solve your problem, since every such software looks for programs in the same place. Unless you are talking about an alternative to Windows 8 ![]() |

The shortcut creation system is part of Windows. They are not created by Classic Shell, the menu only does the job of showing them. So you will have the same problem with any other menu. |
