not sure if this is a bug but I want to boot to windows start screen not desktop and got it setup that way. However when classic shell starts it goes automatically to the desktop when it loads. Since it is a preference setting in classic shell I would prefer not to go to desktop on load unless it's set to do so in the settings.

What version of Windows are you using?

windows 8.1 64bit update 1
on Lenovo Yoga 2 13

Right click the Taskbar -> Properties. Go to the Navigation tab and uncheck the option "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the Desktop instead of Start".

I am a Windows enthusiast and helped a little with Classic Shell's testing and usability/UX feedback.

That option is not checked.

Enable the checkbox that GauarvK mentioned. On Windows 8.1 the start menu setting directly toggles that checkbox for you, but maybe something in your system makes them go out of sync.

I tried that. If I enable the Taskbar option "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the Desktop instead of Start" then my system will boot to the Desktop (as it should). If I uncheck that option my system will boot to the Metro START screen (as it should) and switch to the desktop when classic shell loads. It's clearly the instance of classic shell starting that results in the switch from metro to desktop.

Classic Shell only runs code to switch to Desktop on Windows 8, not 8.1. Are you sure it is the one going to the desktop? Temporarily uncheck "Start automatically for this user" from the General Behavior tab in the settings. If you continue switching to desktop, then it is some other program that does it.
