Post subject:  CSM hangs Windows taskbar after "Monitor Off" ver 4.0.4

I added the "Monitor Off" command to my "Classic Start menu". I use this frequently to turn off the screen of my laptop while running on battery during meetings. To make it easier to activate this command using only the keyboard, I hacked the following registry entry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicStartMenu\Settings

MonitorOffItem.Command=monitor_off
MonitorOffItem.Label=&Turn off Monitor
MonitorOffItem.Tip=Hit <esc> or Move mouse to restore.
MonitorOffItem.Icon=shell32.dll, 284

This allows me to hit "<Control>+<Esc>" followed by the letter 't', and the laptop screen is turned off. When i need to take notes again, i hit escape.

This has worked for some time, but once I upgraded to version 4.0.4 about a month ago, it started causing the windows taskbar to hang. If I click anywhere on the taskbar, the pointer turns into an hourglass. Also, the Start menu Icon turns into a white rectangle.

If I try to click on the taskbar a second time, I get a popup window:

Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer is not responding

If you restart or close the program, you might lose
information.

-> Restart the program
-> Close the program
-> Wait for the program to respond

I have to select "restart the program", and two more dialogs appear:

Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer is not responding...

Windows is checking for a solution to this problem ...

[ ||||| scrolling gas gauge ||||| ]

Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer is restarting...

[ ||||| scrolling gas gauge ||||| ]

All of the icons on the desktop flash a few times, and then everything is OK. This is very annoying, and would be very embarrassing if I was giving a presentation.

I did try capturing a ProcDump, but Procdump prevented the problem from occurring. With Procdump running, the taskbar was totally unresponsive, and the cursor did not turn to an hourglass. The only solution at that point was to kill procdump.

My laptop is a Dell D630 running 64 bit windows 7, and uses the Nvidia chipset.

Post subject:  Re: CSM hangs Windows taskbar after "Monitor Off" ver 4.0.4  Topic is solved

I thought I was running the latest version, because I never saw the "new version available" popup. I installed 4.1.0, and the problem is fixed.

Version 4.0.4, 4.0.5 and 4.0.6 had a bug in the update checking mechanism due to which it reported no updates available even if there was a newer version released. It is fixed in 4.1.0.

Glad to hear you find the Turn Monitor off command useful and the problem was fixed.
