Post subject: | Classic Shell doesn't update after fresh install of all |
Hi everybody I have 3 IDENTICAL computers on which I have install the following (by this order!): A clean Windows 8 Pro (disks have been formatted). All updates of Windows 8 Pro. Via the Windows shop I’ve upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro. All updates of Windows 8.1 Pro. The first program I have installed on all 3 computers was Classic Shell. On 2 computers the program works well. On the 3rd computer Classic Shell also runs well but I am unable to perform an upgrade. I constantly get an error message in the update screen -> “Failed to check for new version”. My internet connection is super and there seems to been no program blocking Classic Shell (there are no other programs!). Why do the other 2 computers update and the 3rd one doesn’t? NOTE: I already repaired the installation of Classic Shell, I’ve also removed and reinstalled the update feature. There was no old installation causing problems: it is a total fresh install!! Who can help me out? I’ve already reinstalled Windows again (takes a full day!!!) but that doesn’t work. |

On the computer that fails to check for update, do you have any firewall on for example the built-in Windows Firewall that may be blocking the Update component of Classic Shell? You can also manually download the update from http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/latest. |

Hi GauravK Thanks for your reply! Yes, I also downloaded the latest version. The firewall isn’t blocking anything. I only have Windows 8.1 Pro running and NO OTHER PROGRAMS AT ALL! It is a fresh install and the first program I have installed was Classic Shell. So, keep on thinking for me… What is the problem??? |

To all facing the same problem… The solution is simple but strange! -> Remove Classic Shell 4.04. -> Reboot (needed to delete all files). -> Download ClassicShell 4.02 -> Install Classic Shell 4.02 -> Push the ‘Update’ shortcut: you’ll will be asked to install 4.04. -> After the install push ‘Update’ again… IT WORKS BEAUTIFULLY AGAIN!!! I don’t no why but Classic Shell needs a bug fix!!! |

If you are already using version 4.0.4 there is nothing to update to. This is the latest version. It is possible the website that stores the update info was down temporarily and now is back up. Unfortunately since you have reinstalled the software you have destroyed the evidence and it's too late to figure out what was going on. |

Dear Ivo, it is nice of you to react! The error I've got was "Failed to check for new version". On the other EXACTLY THE SAME computers the program did check for updates and afterwards told me I was up to date. So the problem was that the computer with the error didn't check at all!!! It has nothing to do with having the latest version or not. On the 2 computers with the latest version it checks for updates without errors. |

Okay if it happens again, please find a way to reliably reproduce the issue. If we can't repro it, it can't be fixed. |
