After Installation, MSCONFIG Stuck In "Selective Startup"?

Hi,

I did a clean install of Microsoft Windows 8 Pro 64Bit today onto my desktop computer system.
I then installed current "Classic Shell" version 4.0.2 onto my Win 8 Pro 64Bit desktop.

Everything seems to be working fine, but I noticed in MSCONFIG that the desktop is booting in "Selective Startup"?
I tried to select "Normal Startup" and reboot the OS, but it reverts back to "Selective Startup in MSCONFIG?

Is this normal behavior for "Classic Shell" program on Windows 8 Pro 64Bit?
I checked two other computers which are running "Classic Shell" & Win 8 Pro and they too are running in "Selective Startup" as well.

Is there any way to use "Classic Shell" & also run "Normal Startup" in MSCONFIG simultaneously?
Thanks!

Jesse

Classic Shell should not change the boot settings. Are you sure it was "Normal startup" before you installed Classic Shell?

BTW, I just tried this on a virtual machine running Windows 8 Pro x64 with a clean install (no software besides the bare minimum needed by the VM host), and I get the same thing - can't make "Normal startup" stick.

Some Internet sources suggest that this may be because there are programs that are set to run on startup. Then it switches to "Selective startup", which lets you control if the startup items should run or not.

On the other hand my Windows 7 machine is set to "Normal startup", and I know for a fact that there are startup items in the registry.

So it's hard to tell the reason. One thing is for sure - it is not related to Classic Shell.

Yes you can be sure that Classic Shell doesn't touch those settings or cause anything to affect them.

Hi,

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro 64Bit on my desktop and no change - still stuck with "Selective startup" in MSCONFIG.

On my test desktop I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit to a spare HDD and it does boot to "Normal startup" in MSCONFIG.
(so we can rule out virus/malware)

Please don't think I was placing blame on your wonderful software!
"Classic Shell" is probably the greatest piece of software for Windows 8 ever made - it's a must have in my professional opinion!

Windows without a [Start] button is like a car without a steering wheel...

Thanks!

I have 2 Windows 8.1 computers both running the current version of Classic Shell.

1 is stuck on "Selective Startup" and the other isn't.

This is not proof that it isn't caused by Classic Shell plus some other weird anomaly but I have been searching for hours for a solution and happened on this page so I thought I would mention it.

If Classic Shell is involved it certainly isn't doing it by itself.

Unless it is a setting within Classic Shell that is different between the 2 computers?

Carl.

Classic Shell does not run any code until Explorer starts. If you are seeing any problems before that they are unrelated to Classic Shell.
