Post subject:  Avast broke my install

ok, here's what happened, i was running Avast AV v7, (this had a WebRep toolbar i did not have enabled)

I uninstalled it, and installed v8

after that i noticed that my custom explorer toolbar had vanished, on closer inspection i found that it had been put into a new one called "Avast online Securiity" {angry} i did not ask for this, and the classicshell explorer bar was greyed out, selecting the avast one got me my bar back, but, it was a default off setting, so i would have had to re-select it for every folder manually - screw that

Avast proptly updated and went wibble, so i removed it, but the toolbar was still broken ... now the title has gone !!

so basically i system restored back to the beginning, uninstalled Avast and binned it, far too much bloatware in that, all i wanted was an AV and it fiddled with EVERYTHING !

anyway, what it has left me with is this ........

much amused i am not, i even upgraded to v4.0.0.2 to try and fix the issue, and failed ..... btw, i much preferred the original 4 coloured icon :(
.... so how the **** do i fix this ?

This is a well-known bug in Explorer. Sometimes, it gets confused between addons, especially when there are multiple addons and one of the addons is updated or uninstalled & reinstalled. To fix this, open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe), go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser and delete the ITBar7Layout value.

you sir are a star :P

Thank You
fixed and working as it should.... now i just have to re-learn Kaspersky AV  been a while since i've used it, so need to remember all of t's little foibles.

one thing is for sure, more and more these days, antivirus programs will simply not just let the user decide what to do, it tries to lock you down into ONLY doing what they recommend ! even if i know some of the files it dislikes are in fact fine
