With a large start button, with transparency, taskbar on bottom, and "Right Click opens Win+X menu" Unchecked:

1. Hovering/Left/Right clicking a 100% transparent start button OFF the taskbar yields nothing
2. Left clicking a 100% transparent start button ON the taskbar, yields the start menu, or whatever you set for "Left Click opens"
3. Right clicking a 100% transparent start button ON the taskbar yields the Win+X menu, rather than classic shells context menu, even with

If left clicking triggers classic shell, why doesn't right clicking?

If classic shell ignores 100% transparency for right click, why doesn't it for left click? (IE left clicking a transparent part would yield the metro screen)
OR
If classic shell is triggered by 100% transparency for left click, why doesn't it for right click? (IE right clicking a transparent part would yield the same thing as clicking a non-transparent part)

I would suggest changing the left click behavior, as the button could always have 99% transparent areas instead of 100% if they want clicking that area to yield classic shell's context menus

Also it may be less cluttering to add the option "Shift key for alternate menu:" in place of the current: shift+win opens, and shift+click opens
This would also accommodate for shift+middle click, and shift+hover which currently aren't even options.

Here are the rules:
1) You can't click on 100% transparent pixels. a) That's how transparent windows work in Windows, and b) That's what you want anyway because the start button is often not rectangular
2) Left click on the start button opens the menu
3) Left click on the taskbar portion that is behind the start button opens the menu
4) Right click on the start button opens either the Classic Shell menu or the Win+X menu, depending on the settings
5) Shift+right-click does the opposite of #4
6) Right click on the taskbar portion that is behind the start button always opens the Win+X menu

Basically it follows the rules from Windows 7. A left click on or around the start button open the start menu. A right click on the button opens the start context menu, A right click around the button opens the taskbar context menu

1. I know and agree with it should be the case
3. I don't see as logical, but it is functional (in making it easier to click the start button)
6. Is logical, however it isn't as functional as 3.

The way I see it, 3 breaks logical rules for function. making it intentional.
However 6 doesn't, even though it could.

I see no reason for it being the right choice for 3, and not the right choice for 6.
If it is right or wrong in one case, then it should be the same in another case correct?

Ofcourse if you dont have control over it, or feel it not worth the time, that Is fine by me, Just thought I would bring it to your attention :P

I think people will expect a left click in the corner to open the start menu and a right click to open the Win+X menu. Doesn't matter if it is logical. It is what's expected.
If you want the other behavior, add a 0.5% opacity and that will solve the problem.

I dont have a problem with it, especially since you don't have to right click the button all that often anyways, so its not a big deal to make sure you click right on it.

and by logical, I meant want I believe is expected (by new users) I believe someone with windows 8 would assume that clicking the very corner would still yield the windows 8 start screen, as it isn't actually on the button. (until they try it and their expectation changes)

but if you find the current behavior to be expected, I have nothing to argue against it (unless by expected you mean from current users)

@Jcee, well the active corners setting also affects this. If set to "None", then left click on the hot corner does open Metro. If hot corners are disabled, the logical expectation is that it opens the Start menu which is what it does. :P
