I was using an earlier version, I don't remember which (because its install file was in my Downloads folder), and this worked well. I updated to 4.0.2 and now my Downloads folder C:\Users\me\Downloads is completely empty. Thanks. Have you put the contents somewhere safe for me? It didn't do this when I updated my laptop to 4.0.2 though. Both computers are Windows 7 64 bit Service Pack 1. Laptop is Enterprise and desktop is Ultimate.

regards

There is no way installing Classic Shell can do anything to your Downloads folder. Most likely something deleted it around the same time. Maybe you did by mistake or maybe some cleanup program did it. Look in Recycle Bin if there is anything there.

Sorry but this is what happened:
- I uninstalled Classic Shell and rebooted
- I ensured that the Downloads folder and its Favorites shortcut were both there (I had to create the folder manually)
- I spent half an hour going through Chrome's downloads list, clicking on items marked "Removed" so that they were re-downloaded
- I verified that all those items were actually in the Downloads folder.
- One of the items I had reinstated was "ClassicShellSetup_4_0_2.exe" from "http://download1400.mediafire.com/favccmr7hi4g/gf87ivx07fw0kcd/ClassicShellSetup_4_0_2.exe", and I relaunched that and reinstalled the Classic Shell software, choosing no special options.
- I checked the Downloads folder and everything had gone.
Thank you for the suggestion to check the Recycle Bin, but the items were not in there unfortunately.

I guess I'm now going have to deinstall the Classic Shell software from both my computers, which is a shame because there is just one teeny weeny feature that has really annoyed me in Win7, but I'll have to learn to live with it.

Bye

Are you saying this happened a SECOND time?
Are you saying that right before running the setup the Downloads folder was not empty, and right after the setup finished, the Downloads folder was empty?
What AV software do you use? It is possible it decided that the setup is a threat and deleted the entire folder indiscriminately. You may try checking its quarantine location.
