Hey all, I am running Classic Shell 4 on a new install of Windows 8.1 with all current updates. It generally works fine, but the Start Screen menu at the top of the page doesn't work. When I select it, I get the spinning wheel thing, which stops after a couple of seconds. I can still access the Start Screen by mousing over to the right side of the screen.

Any ideas?

Try few things:
Press Shift+Win
Run the Start Screen shortcut from the C:\Program Files\Classic Shell folder
Open a command prompt and run "C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -togglenew

Tell me if any of these succeeded showing the start screen.

Also, you are running Windows 8.1 RTM or Preview?

Okay, I am running 8.1 Pro, from the RTM release. This is a new install of Windows (not an upgrade). I've installed all Windows Update updates.

On the three questions of things working:

Shift-Win key works, taking me to the Start screen
The lnk file does not work
The command line does not work.

Another user reported the same issue here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1381 The trial fix was successful but the DLL posted there is only for 64-bit Windows. If you have 64-bit Windows, you can get that DLL and follow the instructions there, otherwise, wait for the next version to include the fix.

In the latest version 4.0.1 or later, this problem is fixed. Try it. :)

I have a similar but rather puzzling issue. The "Start Screen" button on the Classic Start Menu works fine but when I right-clicked and dragged it to the Quick Launch toolbar to create a shortcut there it doesn't work as expected. When I click on the newly created shortcut on Quick Launch (see first attached file below) it opens up the Classic Start Menu instead of going to the Start Screen. As you can see from the "startscreen Properties" dialog in the second attached file, the target for the shortcut is '"C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -togglenew' which is the same as the "Start Screen" button on the Classic Start Menu. Executing '"C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -togglenew' from the Run prompt also opens up the Classic Start Menu instead of going to the Start Screen.

I'm running 64-bit Windows 8.1 (w/latest updates) and I'm using Classic Shell Version 4.1.0 – general release so I didn't try the DLL fix since it is supposed to be fixed in that version.

Any ideas on why this isn't working?

Thanks!

In Classic Shell 4.2.1, the bug is finally fixed where the -togglenew command didn’t work on some Windows 8.1 systems with a touchscreen.
