I've installed classic shell and am quite pleased with it. However, I need to install a driver in windows 7 compatibility mode. I have windows 7 professional 64 bit. Here is a link to the microsoft answers page. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 1dba03968a step 2 click the compatiblity tab The compatibility tab does not show up when running classic shell How can I access this? http://s196.photobucket.com/user/rvmv/m ... 1.jpg.html This tab does not appear. ( The above image comes from this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... ility-mode I'm trying to install a driver for a silicon image 680. Microsoft's driver is an older one. It doesn't see any drives. There is a vista driver dated 11/07 (the one that comes with microsoft is dated 7/07) and has an older version. This driver is supposed to be vista compatible (the 11/07) but windows 7 won't let me install it directly. Says there is no driver compatible with windows 7. http://s196.photobucket.com/user/rvmv/m ... 1.jpg.html This tab does not appear. |

The compatibility tab only shows for EXEs. For some EXEs it shows but is disabled (if they don't support compatibility settings). What kind of file do you have? If you have an EXE and still not compatibility tab, then there's something wrong on your end. It is not related to Classic Shell. If you are not convinced, try uninstalling Classic Shell and then look again at the properties. |

Thanks. I have a .inf file. According to the web link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... ility-mode you place the driver installation file on the desk top. Well, there is no driver exe install file here. Instead there is a .cat, .sys, and a .dll and a .inf file. You should be able to right click on the .inf file I would think, and then install the driver under compatibility mode. since the compatibility tab did not appear, I figured that because classic shell is presenting the menus as they were in XP (which apparently did not support this option) that perhaps classic shell was the cause of the tab not appearing. From your post, that is not the case. So I am still at a loss for installing the device driver, but that is doesn't appear to be related to classic shell. Thanks for clearing that up. Is it possible to simply exit from classic shell without having to un-install it, access the windows 7 shell to do things, then restart classic shell? I am *SO GLAD* to get rid of that blasted aero glass look. And associated slowness. |

I think the instructions you have found are specifically for EXEs, not INFs. INFs are text files, and as such don't have compatibility settings. If you are still suspecting Classic Shell, the cleanest you can do is uninstall and then restart. There are some components of Classic Shell that are not disabled by simply exiting the start menu. |

scrungy_doolittle, Classic Shell is not a full shell replacement and doesn't replace Microsoft's Explorer shell. It is merely an app to restore the Start menu and some Explorer plugins. You can exit the Start menu by right clicking the Start button. It does not affect operation of Windows or drivers or anything else in any other way so this driver query is not related to Classic Shell. ![]() |
