Obviously not classic shell but;

So.. in the middle of a file transfer my D:\Downloads dir simply crashed.
I can access all the sub-dirs (which i have memorised)
but any time I try to access that dir directly i receive an "I/O Error" message.
Even through command prompt when using the 'dir' command within that directory, it hangs, then returns an empty directory.
Booting with linux solves this issue, however I would like to find the root cause, especially if its a hardware issue, warning of impending drive failure.

So has anyone else experienced a directory randomly becoming unavailable, while its parents, and children are still fully accessible...?

Since you have dual boot with Linux, is it possible your corruption is related to hybrid shutdown?

Nope, the linux was on a live CD after the fact; This computer has never been set to duel boot
Also I just reinstalled windows 8.1 2 days ago (to change to a bigger SSD) and the problem still persist.
Its an HDD that hasn't been removed.
Its yet to fail, so Im not sure exactly whats up;
either the head randomly hit the platter causing localized damage? or the index is stored on the drive itself, rather than the boot disk? and is corrupt
