you are confusing the desktop with the start menu.
but there is no simple way to transfer all of your shortcuts from classic shell to windows 10's start menu without pinning them 1 at a time.
Those shortcuts (and the rest of your settings) should be preserved if you later reinstall classic shell |

at the bottom of the settings, there is a 'backup' button
resetting it to default SHOULD display classic shells menu for sure...
If that doesn't work then there is a bug |

It might be the click setting
right click the start button, go to 'settings' check 'show all settings' at the top
look for the 'controls' tab
make sure 'left click opens' is set to 'Classic start menu' and not 'windows start menu' |

| This is not a feature of classic shell, nor is it a feature of any version of windows to my knowledge. If this behavior has been on the computer since the beginning, its likely to be a wonky driver (that some manufacturer decided was a good idea to include) you might have luck opening device manager... |

Open classic shell settings; then check the 'show all settings' button on the top, then look for the start button tab, then adjust the 'button size' field (0 defaults to the size of the image)
Try something like 60 to start, and increase/decrease that number till it matches. |

Neither of which classic shell controls, beyond applying a texture if you opt-into the 'customize taskbar' settings (which are off by default) If you mean the start menu itself; a program running should have 0 bearing... |

it solves your start menu problem by replacing it..
it wont solve your settings problem... for that you need to fix whats wrong with windows.. sfc /scannow in command prompt(admin) is a start |

Its likely you removed certain menu elements.
right click the start button
go to settings
click backup
click reset all settings.
and start from there.
If that doesn't restore the stuff let us know |

Personally it works flawless (on the latest version of windows 10) but there have been various issues cropping up.... |

In 'Classic with 2 columns' Yes easily: just add 'column padding' in the 'customize start menu' tab where you want the divide to be (right after the column break)
In windows 7 style its considerably more difficult but can be done by modifying the skin |

Nothing is ever guaranteed. (even if someone says it is)
and less active development might still include major bugfixes; if they apply to all users of windows 10 (however if you have an odd issue that isn't shared you may be out of luck) |
