I think the middle setting occurs when the top setting would meet the same trigger as when the bottom trigger occurs. I've played around with various things like sort by codes for the Windows Explorer toolbar, wish I was advanced enough with Microsoft products to make a more meaningful contribution ...

Why not simply have a drop-down select menu with the three options instead?
